The Supermarine Spitfire was the British Royal Air Force's premiere fighter during most of WWII and, with the Hawker Hurricane, formed the backbone of defense against the German Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain. The Mk II Spitfire differed little externally from the Mk Ia but featured a 1175HP Rolls-Royce Merlin XII engine upgraded from 1050HP in the Mk 1a. This gave the Mark II a top speed of 360mph at 19,500ft and a service ceiling of 36,500ft.
